Ideas on what to wear for a photoshoot

Family photoshoots are a wonderful way to capture cherished moments and create lasting memories. Whether you're updating your family portraits, capturing a milestone, or simply want to freeze a moment in time, the right attire can enhance the overall aesthetic of your family photos. In this blog, we'll explore what I've seen work for different family photoshoots, ensuring that your family looks wonderful and ready to have a good time.

  1. Coordinate Without Being Matchy-Matchy: Coordinating outfits for a family photoshoot is a fun way to have a cohesive and visually pleasing look. Instead of wearing identical outfits, opt for a color scheme or a palette that complements each other. A really easy way to do this is with colour theory. Click on the below link for a quick run-down as to what colours work well together, look at the complementary and the monochromatic colour alternatives. It means that you'll be able to dress in ways that either match your skin tone/hair colour/shoe colour. Play around, it's got free and great knowledge. https://www.canva.com/colors/color-wheel/

  2. Aim for a relaxed and casual styles that don't distract from your features: big logos and busy patterns draw the viewers eye to the patterns rather than actually looking at yourself. Unless of course we're having fun with a themed photoshoot and the outfits are where we want to be focusing 😂

  3. Dress for the Location and Season: Consider the location and season when planning your family photoshoot attire. If we're shooting outdoors in a natural setting, soft and earthy tones can complement the surroundings beautifully. Also boots, are always a great bet in-case it's a muddy ground that we didn't expect. For a beach or park setting, light and breezy fabrics work well, with some shoes that are really easy to remove for the sand. If it's a winter shoot, layering outfits with cozy sweaters, scarves, or jackets can add warmth and depth to the photos. Layering also helps, because I find that as soon as I've walked for 10 minutes I'm ready to start sweating again! Adapting your clothing choices to the environment will enhance the overall aesthetic and create a cohesive visual story - plus I'm all about comfort!

  4. Comfort is Key for Happy Faces: Ensure that everyone in the family feels comfortable in their chosen outfits. Uncomfortable clothing can lead to fidgeting, which may distract from the natural and joyful moments you want to capture. Opt for clothes that allow freedom of movement and are made from breathable fabrics. Dress children in clothes that they can play and move around in easily, ensuring their smiles shine through. Side note - white always looks lovely and clean and elegant, but, children often can get messy (blowing noses, food, jumping in puddles etc), so darker clothes or a second outfit to bring with you is always a good bet.

A family photoshoot is an opportunity to capture the love, connection, and joy that your family shares. The above ideas will help if you're unsure, but they're more of a guide rather than a rulebook. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun, be yourselves, and let your family's unique bonds and personalities shine through the lens.
